Here are all the details for Saturday’s SlutWalk (which can also be found at http://slutwalkjhb.co.za/?page_id=114)
WHY THE NAME SLUTWALK?
The Slutwalks came about in protest to a police officer in Toronto, Canada who told a group of students that women should not dress like sluts so that they don’t get assaulted. The protests went international and have now taken place in over 70 cities around the world.

No. If you are not able to walk the entire route, there will be a rest stop at the bottom of Bolton Rd where you can wait for the rest of the marchers before rejoining the march.
IS SLUTWALK ONLY FOR WOMEN?
No. Slutwalk Jhb is calling on everyone to come and support our cause. Bring your entire family.
DOES ONE HAVE TO WEAR REVEALING CLOTHES?
Slutwalk is a “come as you are” or “come as you want to” event. The whole idea is that you can wear whatever you like, whether it be a burka or a bikini, jeans, a ball-gown, what you were wearing if and when you were molested, a blou-rokkie – wear whatever you feel comfortable or conveys your message. BUT DON’T FORGET YOU WILL BE OUT IN THE SUN, SO WEAR SUNBLOCK. OR BRING A HAT.
DOES SUPPORTING SLUTWALK MEAN THAT I AM A SLUT?
Absolutely not. The message of Slutwalk Jhb is that no one, by definition, ever ASKS to be assaulted. By supporting Slutwalk, you are saying that you believe no one ever, regardless of age, sex, gender, sexual orientation or sexual history, deserves to be assaulted. And if they are, the blame lies with the person who assaulted them and not with the survivor.
WILL THERE BE MEDIA?
Yes there will be, so be aware that you will most likely be photographed. You will most likely also have microphones shoved in your face, so do think about what you might want to say, what message you might want to convey and be prepared.
CAN WE PICNIC AT THE VENUE?
Because there is a restaurant and bar at the venue, no food or drink will be allowed. However, do make sure you bring water if you don’t want to buy it from the venue.
WILL THERE BE ABLUTION FACILITIES?
Slutwalk Jhb has arranged for 10 portable toilets for the day. We kindly request that you please treat these with respect and keep them clean as any damages will have to be paid for by the organizers.
WHAT SHOULD BE IN THE RAPE SURVIVOR HANDBAG KITS?
In a handbag – a facecloth, underwear, sanitary pads, something for the survivor to clean themselves with, a soap and/or body cream, a small gift & most importantly, a note of encouragement from the person who donated the bag.
WHAT SHOULD WE DO WITH THE RAPE SURVIVOR HANDBAG KITS?
There will be boxes up front with signs showing where to deposit your kits at the start of the march.
WILL THERE BE PARKING?
Parking has been arranged on the cricket field, entrance on Westwold Way and will be R10.00 per vehicle. PLEASE FOLLOW DIRECTIONS OF THE MARSHALS who will be on hand to point out the parking entrance and it is IMPORTANT that people do not park on the street on Westwold Way. Cars parked on the street will be towed. PLEASE CARPOOL WHEREVER POSSIBLE.
CAN WE RIDE BIKES?
The nature of our permission is that this is a protest march, so we would prefer that you do it on foot.
CAN I BRING MY DOG?
We would prefer that you did not, but if you do, please make sure they are socialized, on a leash, can deal with crowds and please pick up after your pooch.
WHAT ARE THE DUTIES OF A MARSHAL?
If you have volunteered to be a marshal, we thank you. Being a marshal will require a little extra effort on your part. You will need to be there from 9a.m. so that Think Bike Marshals, who will be telling you what to do on the day, can brief you on what is required. Marshals will be assisting Think Bike and JMPD in road closures and controlling the participants, but mainly making sure that everyone stays safe. It is imperative that marshals follow the orders of Think Bike or JMPD and remain at their posts until the roads are opened. Then they can join the march. Thank you. We couldn’t do it without you. Marshals will be receiving emails closer to the day with more info.
