Is there a feminist movement in South Africa? What constitutes feminist activism or organizing? What is the difference between feminism and women’s rights? What feminist organizing is taking place and where? What are the challenges faced by individual or groups of feminists within so-called progressive or human rights spaces in advancing feminist goals and organizing? What are the issues that split feminist movements, organisations and spaces? What are the lessons from other organisations / collectives, spaces, countries about organizing women for feminist goals?
The One in Nine Campaign in partnership with Coalition of African Lesbians (CAL) and Feminist Alternatives (FEMAL) is hosting a discussion forum on feminist organizing in South Africa. This discussion, the second in our series, brings together activists from different — sectors and social movements who will reflect on their experiences of feminist organizing. The aim of the discussion forum is to:
· Acknowledge (and celebrate) the role of women feminists and their work
· Draw out lessons for the Campaign and its members in doing feminist work
· Inform strategy and promote feminist movement building.
Date: Friday, 9 December 2011
Time: 11am – 3pm
Venue: 22 Derby Road
