On September 18-19th, HURISA, FEW and CAL will co-host a national conference to examine the crisis facing LGBT people in South Africa, what needs to be done and how. The conference will draw on lessons from recent activities and conversations by the movement and will bring together LGBTI activists, other human rights and social justice activists, feminists and possibly some state and other social actors. Ahead of the conference, we would like to host a 4 hour conversation to explore a feminist articulation of the problems. We feel that this is critical both as preparation for the conference but also as a means to begin a conversation which locates the crisis facing LGBT people within the broader context of a war being waged on women and marginalized groups in SA. The session will be interactive and dynamic. In particular, we will explore some of these questions:

1. What is the nature of the war that the state and society is waging on women?

2. What does this mean for how we think about our relationship with the State, its institutions and “interventions”

3. How do we develop an accessible, collective language to speak truth to this repressive web of power and make real an intersectional approach in our pursuit of change?

4. Why are our strategies not working? What does this mean for how we think about our future organizing on women’s sexual rights and other fundamental freedoms?

5. What do we need to do differently? Where do we begin?

6. How do we build and nurture a space of conversation and solidarity between women of multiple identities and struggles? We hope you will be able to join us and please bring your wild and wonderful materials, ideas, etc. and we will have a display space at the venue.
